  • Catalogue Essay

In this tragic painting filled with cruel nostalgia for a lost country and wasted time, the artist virtually loses control over the construction under the onslaught of emotion. Almost monochromatic, this laconic to the utmost work depicting a broken, dry, lonely tree is painted with love and understanding of symbolic mysticism; it would leave a feeling of despair if it were not for the saving light. “Summoning objects from the gloom, light gives them a measure of existence. For me, probably, the gloom is empty.” (Oleg Vassiliev, Windows of Memory, Moscow, p. 144).
