Sir Norman Foster is most noted for the design and restoration of buildings and urban projects which have shaped cityscapes and enhanced public life. For example, he was involved with the reconstruction of the Reichstag in Berlin and with the creation of London’s Millennium Bridge and “the Gherkin” office building. Considered to be one of England’s greatest designers, Foster received his Knighthood in 1990 and was appointed to the Order of Merit seven years later.
Foster serves as Chairman of Foster + Partners, founded in London with offices worldwide. The company works on large and small scale projects ranging from Moscow’s Crystal Island—a city within a building—to furniture design. His has designed pieces for Tecno, Vitra and Poltrona Frau, as well as a line of aluminum furniture for Thonet. Foster’s designs reflect the cutting edge of technology, yet while he primarily works with steel and glass he maintains an interest in craft materials. His intention has always been to create a sense of comfort and community, to design a space with an appealing and enjoyable environment.
