Pineapple is a tropical fruit indigenous to South America and was introduced to Asia as early as the 18th century. Due to its golden yellow appearance, it was often associated with great wealth and is given auspicious name by various cultures. In Minnan, for example, it is named the yellow pear, pronounced as wang lai, which translates to ‘prosperity comes’.
