  • Catalogue Essay

Mike Bidlo, who lovingly and painstakingly reproduces by hand the icons wrought by the masters how now reside on the Olympus of modern art. Beginning with Cezanne and moving onward to the likes of de Kooning and Warhol, Bidlo, like a monk in a twentieth-century scriptorium, has copied one precious work of art after another, often even having retrospectives, such as a “De Chirico” or a “Leger” show, or, in recent memory, a “Picasso’s Women” show…When we see an artist piously copying these museum-worthy masterpieces, as David’s students slaved at copying the antique, we realize that the prospective vision common to the early twentieth century has drastically reversed itself, in the last decades, to become a rearview mirror.
