  • Catalogue Essay

Chess – a game, rooted in intellect, strategy, methodology and history – a game, through which Cattelan has reconfigured the appearance of a chessboard and has infused the idea of the game with a sense of humor. In Good versus Evil, Cattelan has personalised each chess-figure with a character from popular culture and history, translating tangible objects into recognizable figures and therefore transporting the game of chess to a level that becomes accessible on multiple levels. From active game to artwork – Good versus Evil presents the concept of chess as a ‘battlefield’ in which Cattelan’s visual play on psychological theories becomes the foundation for the work’s execution.

“I’m not really sure satire is the key to my work. Comedians manipulate and make fun of reality, whereas I actually think reality is far more provocative than my art…if you think my work is provocative, it means reality is extremely provocative…”
    (M. Cattelan taken from N. Spector ,‘In conversation with Maurizio Cattelan’, London, 2003, p. 16)
