  • Catalogue Essay

One of Gio Ponti’s most famous commissions was that of the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Sorrento, Italy.  Pieces from the hotel have resurfaced periodically in galleries and on the auction market, and, more recently, in an entirely different and unexpected context.  Exploring the idea of re-appropriating old furniture, Martino Gamper knocked down Ponti’s designs into new creations with the help of an electric saw and some hardware.  The act was spontaneous and was part of a performance at Design Miami/Basel in 2007 and at Nilufar Gallery later that year entitled 'Gio Ponti translated by Martino Gamper'.   The idea to destroy the work of a design great was brought on by Gamper’s frustration with the public’s traditional reaction to revered design and what he perceived to be their disinterest in contemporary design – what is happening right now, and right in front of them.
