  • Catalogue Essay

“Given the provocative dissonance between expressive ‘matter’ and analytical ‘mind,’ these marks compete with the linear configurations to be the key signifying element. One imagines the artist bearing down on the pencil with earnest, concentrated focus, as if in answer to some urgent necessity. The impasto-like ‘weightlessness’ of the marks suggest that that urgent necessity might be to establish a dialogue with the early, objectlike paintings of Jasper Johns and Frank Stella, or possibly with Richard Serra’s expressively ‘weighty’ monochrome drawings.”
(Libby Lumpkin, Mark Grotjahn: Drawings, Los Angeles, Hammer Museum, 2005)

In the present lot, Mark Grotjahn’s linear explosions from two vanishing points on two parallel axes’ continue to attract us to the depth of perception he creates within his works. Black and white, bold and stark, structure and perspective play an important role in his execution; formal clarity and clean organization create a visually symphonic orchestra of lines which reach out to our sight and bring us into Grotjahn’s spatial dimension at the heart of his coaxial butterfly.
