In 1967 Maria Pergay began working in stainless steel after designing objects in silver for more than a decade.  The French steel manufacturer Ugine-Gueugnon invited Pergay, among other designers including Michel Boyer and François Monnet, to consider using their new stainless steel product by the name of Uginox in their designs.  Pergay accepted and designed her first piece in Uginox, the ‘Fying Carpet’ daybed.  The feat of executing a design from stainless steel sheets on this scale without surface imperfections, seams or any specialized equipment to manipulate the material is one of the factors in the importance of the ‘Flying Carpet’ design.
