  • Catalogue Essay

The profusion of characters that perform their roles in Althoff’s art is complemented by his varied use of media and styles. Whether figurative or abstract, photographed or drawn, painted or sewn, every image and object in Althoff’s art has its own story. In fact, the stories around one work may have multiple layers and alternate scenarios, making it hard to attach any explicit reading of the artist’s intention. In counterpoint to this seemingly impenetrable density and elaboration is an equally strong urge to simplify and condense.
    N. Baume, ed., Kai KeinRespeckt (Kai NoRespect), Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, 2004, pp. 14-15
