“My work comes from direct experience: I am a sort of cultural sieve, processing my own global cultural detritus.”
(Jules de Balincourt in conversation with Morgan Falconer, Art World Magazine, December 2007 – January 2008)
Illustrative and stark with bold lettering, strident in his use of colour and characteristically refined naïveté, Jules de Balincourt has risen to prominence over the past years with an arsenal of paintings that challenge political ideas, create dreamlike realities, compose abstract complexities on the canvas, and include a warm feel with a retro touch. Born in Paris but raised in California, Balincourt works on the cusp of a fine line between abstract figuratism and representational / still life painting. Working from his studio in Brooklyn, NYC, the artist continuously manages to surprise with his beaming lines, colorfully vibrant and blissfully compositional settings which are left to the viewer to adapt and react to. His political viewpoint is commonly expressed throughout his works.

Created and exhibited at the ‘Unknowing Man’s Nature’ show at the Zach Feuer Gallery New York, Unkinking the Kinks is a visually compelling painting, dashing lines which the artist explains as being “a formal way to convey the idea of broadcasting, or the beam of communication breaching out to a wider audience.” (Taken from www.zachfeuer.com) The light yet impacting and graphic quality the work carries is made to remind us of a gallery or museum, a space where de Balincourt is allowed room for deconstructing, contextualizing, and reflecting on his own iconography from an adapted Americana childhood. This immigration to the USA occurred when de Balincourt was seven, leaving behind a liberal France in the 1980s and landing in a multi-cultural state where influences from different cultures still shine through his oeuvre. A fresh take on painting, de Balincourt reminds us of the importance in the act of painting and how it helps illuminate and analyze the human and material conditions of contemporary life.
