  • Catalogue Essay

As one of the leading figures of new German Expressionism – along with Georg Baselitz and Anselm Kiefer – Jörg Immendorff’s international recognition as a painter has its roots in the 1970s. Approaching his works through a conceptualist standpoint Immendorff deals with the crisis of post-war German identity, its effect on art and present-day society as well as an obsessed relationship with modernity and the belief that the artist is an integral political and social force. Filled with complex symbolism, his paintings can be read as an allegory, as the essence of Immendorff’s work lies in a rewriting of history. Reflecting over his artistic entity within the context of modernity, he critically deals with modern art and its role within the history of art. The present lot Section de merde allemande can be taken as one example for Immendorff’s colorful and strikingly dynamic paintings of that time, reflecting his critical view on society and the present political environment.
