Often referred to as a self- proclaimed exorcist and cult-figure, Jonathan Meese in the present lot, celebrates himself accordingly. At first sight Sankt Ich III is reminiscent of a teenager's self created collage of pop idols, yet Meese’s work goes beyond. In each and every photograoph he reinvents himself and his own state, whilst exaggerating his real-life "wild-man" features to the extreme. In combination with the title, Meese ironically plays on his celebrity-status as god, by using Sankt - the German prefix for saint, describing and calling himself a saint. Controversial in its presentation, Meese leaves the viewer behind with a variety of impressions and emotions – a variety of his own appearances, yet also a variety in the way he views himself. Essentially, the spectator becomes confronted with what Meese considers to be the "mystery", the "enigma" of art and what it can convey.
