  • Catalogue Essay

First recognized as an automatist painter, Riopelle began his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts only to later move to Paris. In Paris his style developed into an abstract expressionism that lent itself to powerful atmospheres maintained by his use of palette knives. The present lot reflects the unique human process of abstract expressionist painting as it is both automatic and full of force.
