The title of Janine Antoni’s Caryatid refers to a component of classical Greek architecture in which a female figure replaces a typical column. Antoni has inverted the figure, turning it on its head: at first glance the photograph appears to capture the artist’s back as she balances upside-down on the clay pot, relieving the female body of the labor it traditionally performed. On second look, it is apparent that the photograph is inverted, exchanging the roles of support between vessel and body. Coupled with the photograph is the same clay vase, now broken into fragments that are held within its own remains.
