Despite being recognised as a key figure within Twentieth Century Japanese photography, Yamawaki only investigated this medium whilst he was at the Bauhaus in 1930-2. As a trained architect, he ceased his photographic activity upon his return to Japan until 1939 when a commission from the Hall of Nations in New York caused him to revisit the medium; but with a different approach.
In collaboration with Ken Domon, Yamawaki was commissioned to produce a series of photomontages as part of the Japanese section of the Hall of Nations at the New York Worlds Fair, 1939. The collages were huge in scale and all were meant to promote Japanese culture and society to their American audience. The example here is a final mock up of one of the collages and was acquired by Jacobson from Yamawaki in 1985. This work is unique.
