  • Catalogue Essay

The history of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak started in 1972 being the first luxury wristwatch at the time to incorporate a stainless steel case with an integrated bracelet taking its inspiration from a ship’s porthole, which is proudly portrayed throughout its naked screws on the bezel. Designed by the late Gerald Genta, the Royal Oak was the first to incorporate such idea. In 1976, Patek Philippe introduced the Nautilus, similarly designed by Gerald Genta with its inspiration deriving from the porthole as well, making the Nautilus a direct competitor of the Royal Oak.

Still thriving till date and gaining a cult-like following over the years, Audemars Piguet introduced the ref. 15450 in 2012 replacing the former ref. 15300. With a case measuring 37mm, the ref. 15450 is a unisex wristwatch with a beautiful dimension catering to most wrist sizes. The present example in 18K pink gold with a black tappisiere dial fitted with a black crocodile strap is an attractive combination with a subtle hint of flamboyance. Very well-preserved and accompanied by the full set of accessories, the present timepiece is an excellent one for both ladies and gentlemen.

    Audemars Piguet

    Swiss • 1881

A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.

Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
