  • Catalogue Essay

The repeating timepiece was first developed in the late 17th when Daniel Quare invented an hour and quarter striking mechanism, which in 1687 along with Thomas Tompion and Edward Barlow they received a patent for a quarter repeating mechanism on two hammers. Additional highlights in the evolution of the repeating watch included Samuel Watsons five-minute repeater in 1710, and Thomas Mudges first striking minute repeating watch around 1750. Abraham-Louis Breguet created a two-tone repeating with the use of gongs striking a steel coil inside the case. Patek Philippe introduced their first quarter repeating watch around 1839, and their first minute repeater in 1845.

The present quarter repeating openface pocket is an early generation example of a Patek Philippe complicated watch, and demonstrates from its very beginning, the brand was committed to quality high grade finished movements. It is these characteristics that collectors seek out today in both modern and vintage timepieces. This openface watch from 1882 remains in very good overall condition with a clear tone repeating mechanism. Furthermore, it is accompanied by its original Certificate of Origin, fitted presentation box, as well additional crystal and mainspring. The watch is a complete package and a wonderful opportunity to own a rare and fine Patek Philippe complicated timepiece.
