  • Catalogue Essay

The coveted and highly sought after Omega Speedmaster ref. 376.0822 nicknamed “The Holy Grail”, was launched in an unnumbered limited production of approximately 2,000 pieces with 200 pieces fitted with leather straps. The production spanned only for one year from 1987-1988, earning its rightful pseudonym as a grail piece. The present example is one of the most well-preserved examples to ever appear at auction in recent times. First, the case is correct with a shorter crown and pushers that differ from serviced examples which feature longer pushers. The bezel is similarly correct featuring a dot touching the “0” on the 70 of the tachymeter scale differing from serviced examples where the dot does not touch. The “Singer-made” dial is correct featuring “10” on the 2 O’clock position and further confirmed by the “vinyl-like” patterned concentric circles in the subsidiary dials. The hands are also correct featuring longer luminous material applied rather than the “short-lumed” hands found on serviced examples. Furthermore, the present example features the correct 1450 bracelet with endlinks stamped “809”.

Offered in extremely well-preserved and excellent overall condition with the red seal still intact on the caseback, the present Omega Speedmaster “Holy Grail” is more than just a rare watch. It is a fantastically honest example of the prized reference and is further complete with the original Omega guarantee stamped by German retailer Uhren Juwelen Luithle and it was sold to the original German owner who acquired this beautiful specimen on 26th May 1989, approximately 6 months after the discontinuation in production of the reference.

  • Artist Biography

    Omega

    Swiss • 1848

Omega's rich history begins with its founder, Louis Brandt, who established the firm in 1848 in La Chaux de Fonds. In 1903, the company changed its name to Omega, becoming the only watch brand in history to have been named after one its own movements. A full-fledged manufacturer of highly accurate, affordable and reliable watches, its sterling reputation enabled them to be chosen as the first watch company to time the Olympic Games beginning in 1932. Its continued focus on precision and reliability ultimately led their Speedmaster chronograph wristwatch to be chosen by NASA in 1965 — the first watch worn on the moon.

Key models sought-after by collectors include their first, oversized water-resistant chronograph — the reference 2077, early Speedmaster models such as the CK 2915 and 2998, military-issued versions of the Seamaster and oversized chronometer models such as those fitted with their prestigious caliber 30T2Rg.
