  • Catalogue Essay

When a watch is designed to ultimate perfection by a dedicated guru of case design and aesthetics, it can be considered as a jackpot for a watch manufacturer, such as the case with Patek Philippe’s reference 5711. The harmoniously balanced though a simple yet sophisticatedly crafted three-piece case taking inspiration from the portholes of a ship, strikes as one of the most successful models since its initial launch in the 1970’s.

Molded and shaped by the infamous Gerald Genta in 1976, the Nautilus was born. What was at the time the most expensive stainless steel wristwatch on the market, is now a true icon of horology and one of the most sought after watches in the world today. Originally born as the reference 3700, the Nautilus did not change much of its aesthetics over the years, however refined. When the stainless steel reference 3700 was discontinued in the 1980’s, it was replaced by the reference 3800 in a smaller size measuring 37.5mm, whilst the earlier featured at 40mm case. Replacing the 3800 was the reference 3710, a complicated Nautilus featuring a power reserve indicator. The reference 5711 was a true tribute to its original forefather, featuring a clean ribbed greyish blue dial with a date window on the 3 O’clock position and sweep center seconds.

The present example is preserved in excellent overall condition and is further blessed by the original certificate of origin and complete of all of its accessories. Attractive and highly sought after by collectors, the present example demands a long waiting list at boutiques and is incredibly hard to obtain. This is a fantastic opportunity for collectors in queue to acquire the elusive timepiece at an instance.
