  • Catalogue Essay

For the reference 5230, Patek Philippe imbibed the classic design of its earlier models, and relaunched the famous world time watch with a gorgeous and carefully designed white gold case, in addition to a breathtakingly mesmerizing, hand-crafted guilloché dial.

The hour and minute hands of the present watch display local time in the middle of the dial. Surrounding it are two fascinating rings, the outer ring with the names of 24 metropolises that stand for 24 time zones, the inner ring with a 24-hour scale featuring a brighter part with a sun symbol for the daytime hours and a darker one with a moon symbol for the nocturnal hours. Eliminating the need to calculate time differences or to stop the watch and move the hands, the wearer can conveniently reset the time zone by making use of the push piece at 10 o’clock. The setting is complete when the city that stands for the destination time zone is at the top of the dial.

Beautiful and extremely useful, the world time mechanism was a significant breakthrough in the history of horology. Completed with a Certificate of Origin and a wooden presentation box, this is a rare chance for any watch collectors to possess a piece that represents horological finesse at its best.

Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
