  • Catalogue Essay

Breitling has long been associated to the world of aviation since it was founded in 1884. The firm has produced many iconic timepieces over the years such as the Navitimer, Chronomat and the Breitling Emergency. Considered by many as a professional "tool" watch for pilots and adventure seekers, it is to no surprise that the firm had secured a brand recognition which remains significant till date. Breitling introduced a chronograph wristwatch in the 1960's referenced 765 AVI. The AVI was significant yet unusual as it was housed in a 41mm case which was considered very large in size during that period of time.

The present example is a reference 765 AVI with over-sized luminous Arabic numerals and secured by a screw back case to enhance its waterproof capabilities. Presented in overall very good condition, this watch is an attractive chronograph wristwatch with a case size that is inline with the trend today.

Reference 810.3 was introduced in 1969 and was available in 3 iterations: the present “Panda”, a “Reverse Panda” and a fully silvered one. The present watch features a movement stamped WOG, denoting the American original sale location.

    Breitling

    Swiss • 1884

The firm started by Leon Breitling in 1884 is best known for its technical aviation and oceanic watches. Today, all models are outfitted with certified chronometer movements, used for accurate timing. Early aviation pioneers in specialized chronograph timepieces, Breitling introduced the circular slide rule to watches in the 1940s for use by pilots. The firm’s most iconic chronograph, the Navitimer, was introduced in 1954 and continues to be manufactured today. Another key model is the Duograph, a split-seconds chronograph that was Breitling's most prestigious wristwatch during the 1940s through '60s. Their watches are built on their reputation for precision and sturdiness.
