Born of the feminist movement of the 1970s, Helena Almeida's photographs contest the illusion of the photographic surface by here combining traditional black and white photographs with paint or thread woven through the print. In lots 90-91, Almeida poses as her own subject, and, in doing so, uses the formal boundaries of the image to address the limitations of female representations.
