  • Catalogue Essay

Around twilight, when the sun is below the horizon, the sky can turn a midnight blue, as seen in the present work by Seoul-based artist Han Sungpil. Since 2004, Han has chosen this time of day known as the blue hour to photograph the life-size printed screens that are erected to conceal buildings undergoing restoration, drawing our attention to these visual illusions and how an image of the building can stand in for the building itself. The Dominion of Light, offered here, showcasing a 1:1 facsimile of the 45-metre-high steeple of the Myeongdong Cathedral – a symbol of the Korean Catholic Church and an instantly recognisable feature of the Seoul cityscape – has become the most desired image from his Facade series. His work has been exhibited internationally in numerous museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Tokyo Photographic Art Museum; and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
