  • Catalogue Essay

    In each work from this renowned series of diptychs and triptychs, Hai Bo juxtaposes an old photograph, usually of himself, his family, or friends, with his contemporary reconstruction of the same photograph featuring its original subjects who are now decades older. The artist's efforts to locate his subjects for these works mirrors millions of displaced families' attempts to reunite after the Cultural Revolution. Lots 303-305 feature the artist himself in a personal and political commentary on China's transformation in the past half-century. Bridge was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2001; the present lot is a rarely available medium-sized edition of this work.
