Manifesting feminist themes through the imagery and materials of her work, Ghada Amer incorporates embroidery into her paintings. According to Amer: “When I was growing up, women would gather and sew together. So I thought this was a good way to talk about women and language ... That’s why I wanted to paint with sewing it, but out of necessity, not out of loving the craft.” To create Sindy in Pink, she combined paint with embroidery, incorporating both abstract and figurative elements that include the forms of leaves. Against this colorful background is the repeated phrase “WE ARE THE GRANDDAUGHTERS OF THE WITCHES YOU COULD NOT BURN.”
