  • Catalogue Essay

Along with his contemporaries such as Kai Althoff, Katharina Grosse, Bernhard Martin, Neo Rauch and Thomas Scheibitz , Franz Ackermann has emerged as one of the most significant German painters on the Ackermann has developed stylized topographical pictorial journals of his travels which he refers to as "mental maps". The present lot presents an amalgamation of patterns and images that illustrate a more comprehensive understanding than a conventional atlas map, one seeking to communicate the complexity and rootlessness of today’s world. Thus in Evasion IV the artist incorporates both the natural and the man-made; tangled roots turn into highways and the view of an ocean is tunneled through to an industrial wasteland. Concentric and psychedelic bright flower shaped patterns contrast with dark cubic depictions of high rise buildings. These kaleidoscopic and geometric compositions offer an emotive record of Ackermann’s experiences, communicating the artist’s feelings of dislocation and curiosity in a perpetually shrinking world.
