  • Catalogue Essay

Cucchi is comfortable with the mutability of his forms. He will rub out extremities of his figures to fold them more gently into harmony with the landscape, or rhyme the hollow of a cheek with that of a hill. The general atmosphere is of dreamy stops in time, heightened in the closed or, perhaps, blinking eyes of some of the heads. These sleepy heads double as stonelike forms, and bodies metamorphose into mountains. We’re in the land of nod, and it’s seductive but not comfortable. A calmer artist than before, Cucchi is emerging as a poet of somnolence. J. Fyfe, ‘Enzo Cucchi at Tony Shafrazi – Brief Article’ in Art in America, April, 2001
