  • Catalogue Essay

Working within the spectrums of art, architecture and design, the Scandinavian duo Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset develop their research into artworks which are at the same time conceptual, digestible and visually cunning. In This place can't be yours the title is quoted onto a replica rotating billboard questioning the rights of ownership within the public and private domains, thus creating an obsolete conceptual merit with little to no aesthetic presence apart from the slow rotating boards revealing the bold phrase over and over repeatedly. A play on space within a space, a mundane motto reminding the viewer that the media outlets which we commonly stumble upon are only available to corporations and individuals who can afford to pay huge amounts of money for the right to this designated space, thus handicapping the majority of consumer's right to ownership within the public realm.
"Our aim is to investigate some of the power structures that these spaces derive from, and by exchanging and replacing some of these structures show how fragile they actually are." (Elmgreen & Dragset in conversation with E. Manns in Kultureflash.net, 2002)
