A figurative artist who employed abstraction in her celebrated sculptures and graphic arts, Elizabeth Catlett is one of the most celebrated African American artists of the 20th century. Throughout her long career, Catlett was committed to a visual vocabulary rooted in the strength, beauty, and dignity of African American women. Bather, 2009, is a carved wooden sculpture from late in her career. Its powerful forms reveal the inspiration she took from modernism and from the sculptural traditions of West Africa and Pre-Columbian Mexico.
