  • Catalogue Essay

The lines - relentless and obsessive - in this painting by Doug Argue are, upon close inspection, in fact stretched words taken from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.

‘The foundation of his work is the concept that all life forms on earth are likely had on progenitor, and that one language evolved into the thousands that now exist. Through a combination of purpose and chance, genes and language are in a constant state of flux providing almost in£nite possibilities of recombination. His work embodies all the questions one might contemplate, and yields all the answers the viewer chooses to see.’ –Asher Edelman
