  • Catalogue Essay

Claire Bataille a major contemporary Belgian interior designer who has been active for more than 35 years in late 1968 she joined partnership with Paul ibens. Their success and reputation are based on their ability to create a symbiosis between interior and exterior, architecture and art, thus expressing a contemporary notion of the art of living. Far from being minimalist, the sense of space and volume are stressed through the notion of material and color without any emphasis on the pictorial effect. In fact, the harmony is reached by showcasing and dematerialising the material through the use of white, glass or metal.

Some of their major buildings are: Convent Sisters of the Holy Family, Sint Job in’t Goor, 1971, Maison Corthout in Schilde, 1974 and Maison Vandenriessche in Bellem, 1984. The present lot, comes from the apartment of Mrs. Zucker, an important contemporary art collector. She specially commissioned Claire Bataille to do the interior and design the furniture for the five following partners.
