  • Provenance

Donated by the artist to the Council for At-Risk Academics

  • Catalogue Essay

“Generously donated by the artist to Cara (the Council for At-Risk Academics), to be sold to raise funds to support Cara’s work.

Cara was founded in 1933 by academics and scientists in the UK as the Academic Assistance Council (AAC), to be a rescue mission for their colleagues who were being expelled from their posts in Nazi Germany. From the beginning, the AAC’s founders saw their task as having two goals - “the relief of suffering” and “the defence of learning and science” – saving the individuals, but also saving, for the good of all, the expertise and knowledge which they carried in their heads. Later that year, the AAC was closely involved with the successful efforts to bring the library and staff of the Warburg Institute to the UK. The Institute went on to serve as a focus for a number of German and Austrian art historians, such as Ernst Gombrich, who had been forced to flee and who were able to survive on grants from the AAC and others, on the generosity of private individuals and on freelance work.

Over eighty years later Cara is continuing the AAC’s mission, working with over 110 universities and institutes in the UK, including leading art colleges, and also with universities abroad, to provide places of refuge for university-level teachers and researchers who are suffering as a result of discrimination, persecution, violence and conflict. Many are committed to returning home to rebuild their societies when conditions allow; but in the meantime they need a safe haven, and the opportunity to maintain and develop the skills and the networks that they will need when they go back. Recent events in the Middle East have greatly increased Cara’s workload, with applications for support rising sharply, particularly from Syria. The proceeds of the sale of this work will go directly to cover the costs of Fellowships to bring threatened academics and their families to safety.”
