The British representative at the 1990 Venice Biennale, Turner Prize winner in 1991, commissioned to fill the massive Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern in 2002 as well as various public art installations in Chicago, Newcastle and New York, Anish Kapoor is one of the worlds leading sculptors to this date and a name that's synonymous with a body of work that blends a modernist sense of pure materiality with a fascination for the manipulation of shapes and the perception of space.
Highly inventive and part of a generation of sculptors who emerged from Britain in the early 80's the Indian born artist remains continual in his search for manifestations of the sublime, exploring the relationship between materials and their expressive properties through form and function. Whether through steel, alabaster, wax or polyester resin, Kapoor draws upon the wonder and passions of the subconscious, spiritual and ethereal, successfully translating this language into form, resonating our capabilities to see the very fibers of our ontology.
In Untitled from 2004 the concave formation, striking in its appearance, the steel's high-tech craft and modernist glorification of geometry translates Kapoor's ideas into a traditional index of the enduring intelligibility that transcends changing appearances. The reversed and slightly blurred reality which is reflected gives the viewer a sense of an illusionary and metaphysical world that one can see himself in but can't feel or place due to the intense optical mirage produced by the careful curvature and it's effect on our sight. A clear example of the artist's fascination with the symmetry of shapes and their consequence on our psyche, this lot clearly fulfills Kapoor's search into the deeper realms of the ethereal.
