  • Catalogue Essay

This fantastic story in the spirit of Chagall about how people live in trees and fly like birds was drawn, like all of Slepyshev's paintings, with a fevered expressive carelessness. The ability to levitate for the artist, however, signifies a lightness and even the opposite – in his works not only are the earth and human flesh weighty and coarse, filled with energy, movement, overflowing with vitality, but so are the angelic bodies. Continually redrawing approximately the same plots, Slepyshev boldly situates bible stories into Russian realism. The details are not important: the impression is always more important for him than the content.
Slepyshev took one step from total obscurity on the periphery of the non¬conformist underground to official recognition at the time of perestroika, and then the State Prize. And subsequently everything proceeded in such a way that the composer Edison Denisov dedicated a work to him called ‘Anatoly Stepanovich – favourite of the stars and presidents.'
