  • Catalogue Essay

In his essay “Ana Mendieta: Automonous Body,” critic Donald Kuspit describes Mendieta’s performance and body of work, as “not only profoundly feminist, but encompasses and evokes the deepest psychological issues of life.” In the Silueta Series, her most acclaimed body of work, Mendieta melds sculpture, performance, earth, body and conceptual art; carving her form into the earth and leaving its traces in ephemeral elements such as blood, sea foam, flowers, mud and fire. For Heart of Rock with Blood (Corazon de roca con sangre), one of the earliest works in the Silueta Series, Mendieta returned to a site on the Iowa River where she had created earlier Siluetas. Scattered dried leaves had drifted over the silhouette she’d carved in the mud of the riverbank and, after selecting a rock from the site, she placed it on the form at the position of the heart, covered it in blood-red tempura then lay face down on it, filling the outline with her naked body. Art historian, Megan Heuer, in her review “Ana Mendieta: Earth Body, Sculpture and Performance,” describes Mendieta’s Siluetas as being analogous to the ephemeral natural sculptures of Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy, who create forms “out of natural materials in the landscape without permanently transforming the environment, but ‘fixing’ these delicate, ephemeral impressions with photography.” “The Siluetas are as universal as they are specific,” she writes, “metaphorizing the relationship between the body and nature, recording the unavoidable fact of human impact in the natural world, shallow and brief in geological terms, but beautiful and inescapable nevertheless.”
