  • Catalogue Essay

This photograph was given originally by Aaron Siskind to the poet, publisher, and photographer Jonathan Williams (1929-2008). The two met at the experimental Black Mountain College in North Carolina in the early 1950s, where Siskind became a photographic mentor to Williams. Williams was the founder of the small-press journal The Jargon Society whose issues paired the photography of Siskind, Harry Callahan, Clarence John Laughlin, Frederick Sommer, and others, with text by poets and writers such as Charles Olson, Denise Levertov, Henry Miller, and Buckminster Fuller.
