Global Bidding Sets New Records
Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz, Deputy Chairmen and Co-Heads of Editions, said, “We were thrilled to kick off Phillips’ Spring auction season here in New York with such a bang. Our February sale featured exciting and rare-to-market contemporary works, with 20th century titans leading the sale. A complete set of four screenprints created after Jean-Michel Basquiat was the top lot, doubling its low estimate, while collectors from all over the world — from Argentina to Australia — also competed fiercely for artworks by Andy Warhol, Banksy, and Roy Lichtenstein. A collection of twenty-two works on paper and hand-colored prints by Warhol saw particularly strong interest, with fierce international bidding leading to prices that were double or triple the high estimate. New auction records were set across the board, including those for works by Keith Haring, Joan Mitchell, and David Hockney. We look forward to continuing the momentum with our next sale in New York this April.”
