Evening & Day Editions
London Auction 18 – 19 January 2023
Sale Total: £6,411,762 / $7,956,355 / €7,327,362
Energized Bidding
Rebecca Tooby-Desmond, Specialist, Head of Sale, and Auctioneer, said, “The London Editions team are thrilled to have started our tenth anniversary year on such a high note, with a result of £6.4 Million and sell through rates of 99% by value and 96% by lot. Our sale opened with energized bidding from a busy saleroom, on the phone, and online for a selection of works by Pablo Picasso, many of which sold for well above the high estimate. This momentum continued throughout the sale with strong depth of bidding from over 1,120 participants taking part in the auction from across 51 countries worldwide. We were particularly pleased with the strong results achieved for all four of Andy Warhol’s Reigning Queens and also his Flowers, which sold for £163,800, more than tripling the high estimate. David Hockney’s Dog Wall set a new auction record, and his Lithograph of Water achieved £214,200, over double the high estimate. Having set the stage for another fantastic year for Phillips Editions, we are looking forward to our next auction taking place in New York on the 15th of February.”
Redefining the Art of Editions Collecting
Robert Kennan, Head of Editions, Europe, said, “This tremendous result, with a host of auction records broken, is a most fitting way to begin our tenth anniversary year for Editions in London. Over the past decade we have focused on redefining the Editions collecting field, with the support of Cary Leibowitz and Kelly Troester who started Phillips’ Editions Department in New York five years prior. Editions are wonderfully rich and varied and we continue to push the boundaries of this rapidly growing market. Our thanks to everyone who has contributed to our becoming London market leader in this vibrant and exciting collecting field.”
