FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
London – 15 April 2014 – Phillips is delighted to announce The Architect, an inaugural auction of works designed by important architects, created by Lee F. Mindel FAIA. The auction will offer rare and significant pieces from the 19th, 20th and 21st century, Arts & Crafts, Wiener Werkstätte, Art Deco and Modernist Periods, Bauhaus, Mid-Century French and American design.
One of the earliest works offered in The Architect is an 1880’s piece by Edward William Godwin. Another more contemporary highlight is a very rare paper tea house by Shigeru Ban designed in 2006. The auction comprises approximately 100 lots and carries a pre-sale low estimate of £2,286,000 / $3,819,600 / €2,774,500 and a pre-sale high estimate of £3,188,000 / $5,326,700 / €3,869,200.
Other highlights include Frank O. Gehry’s monumental table for the temporary offices of Chiat/Day Advertising Co., Venice, California and Buckminster Fuller’s Unique ‘Dymaxion Airocean World’ map, 1979.
“The Architect will celebrate the contributions architects have made to our environment through the furniture, objects, and equipment they’ve invented in response to the buildings they’ve conceived. The most rigorous spaces, after all, are integrated environments. As Louis Kahn said, "Design is not making beauty. Beauty emerges from selection, affinities, integration, love." Furniture, millwork, and lighting by great architects have the ability to animate space, to transcend their status as mere objects. "Architecture is the reaching out for the truth," Kahn continued. It is through an investigation of those objects that we can approach the philosophy of these great authors and ultimately, we hope, the truth.” Lee F. Mindel, FAIA
“In this museum-quality auction and exhibition we will bring together works by iconic architects illustrating the essence of these great design pieces by highlighting the relationship and the dialogue between building and object. We are delighted to be working with Lee F. Mindel again after the huge success of our Important Nordic Design Auction in November 2011.” Alexander Payne, Worldwide Director of Design
