FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

London – 16 April 2014 – Phillips is pleased to announce the highlights from the forthcoming April Design Auction in London. The auction comprises approximately 214 lots carrying a pre-sale low estimate of £3,796,500 / $6,343,507 / €4,607,771 and a pre-sale high estimate of £5,488,500 / $9,170,641 / €6,661,334.

“Following on from the success of our March Contemporary Art and Design Auction we have great momentum and are continuing to deliver the best Design works with the most exceptional provenances to collectors today. Phillips is thrilled to present this catalogue which promises to be an exciting sale.” Ben Williams, Senior Specialist and Head of Sale, London

Highlights offered in the sale include Jean Royère’s Tour Eiffel table, circa 1963 which incorporates a graphic interpretation of the Parisian landmark, invoking France’s leading role in the birth of modern design. Royère used the motif on a variety of furnishings, lighting and architectural details. In contrast, Jean Royère’s ‘Ours Polaire’ (polar bear) sofa is a huge, voluminous form with excellent provenance, acquired directly from Royère around 1952. Another highlight is the Important and large sculpture by Alexandre Noll; originally in the artists collection and at over a metre in height the impressive sculpture exquisitely demonstrates Noll’s belief in the sacredness of wood.

Four lots of excellent provenance by Diego Giacometti are included in the sale amongst which is the 'Têtes de lionnes' armchair. This form is one of his earliest functional works. Also included is Giacometti’s ‘Carcasse’ low table, circa 1979.

Exceptional examples of 20th and 21st century decorative arts and design will be included in the Design Auction. Other highlights offered in the sale include works by Fontana Arte, Josef Frank, Axel Einar Hjorth, Dagobert Peche, Maria Pergay, Edward William Godwin, Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand and Le Corbusier.
