WORLD RECORD ACHIEVED FOR ARTURO HERRERA
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York - 22 May 2012 - Phillips de Pury & Company’s
Latin America auction at 450 Park Avenue, sold 66% by value and 61% by lot totaling $3,525,375.
Overall, bidders were enthused by the auction’s avant-garde works. The presentation of Arturo Herrera’s felt sculpture Untitled, 1998, which sold for $206,500, almost $180,000 over its high estimate, prompted an energetic bidding session resulting in a world record for the artist.
Competitive bidding on pieces by Os Gêmeos, Hélio Oiticia, Mira Schendel and Ivan Serpa reflected collectors’ admiration for the range of Brazilian works presented.
“We were pleased with the energy and excitement surrounding the auction. It is a clear indication that the Latin American art market remains solid and will continue to grow in the coming years.” says Henry Allsopp, International Head of Latin America Department.
