FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York – 15 June 2012 - Phillips de Pury & Company’s
New York Design auction sold 86% by value and 77% by lot, totaling $3,831,750.
Strong results were achieved for Contemporary Design, Art Deco and Mid-Century French works, as well as Nordic Design and Contemporary Ceramics. The focused sale brought international bidders to the phone banks and to the room reflecting the growing strength of the Design Market.
The sale’s top lot, François-Xavier Lalanne’s, Set of four sheep, sold well above the high estimate at $726,500. There was lively bidding for Jean Royére’s, Rare ‘Ambassador’ sofa, which sold for $212,500 and Ken Price’s, ceramic sculpture ‘Steeps’ which sold at $98,500, both selling well above their high estimates.
In the Nordic section of the sale, a world record was achieved for Swedish Designer Axel Einar Hjorth for his ‘Utö’ dining table, ca. 1932, selling nearly five times its estimate for $74,500 after extensive competition between several phone bidders.
“We’re thrilled with today’s strong results. This sale built on the outstanding results achieved in our London spring sale in April. We look forward to continuing to champion the finest design and decorative arts from the 20th & 21st Centuries and look forward to an excellent fall season,” says Alexander Payne, Worldwide Director of Design, Phillips de Pury & Company.
