FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York – 24 May 2012 - Phillips de Pury & Company is pleased to announce highlights from its upcoming New York Design auction. This carefully curated sale will include much sought-after works by design masters including a set of four sheep by François-Xavier Lalanne, an important dressing table by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, a large ‘double spiral’ wall light by Poul Henningsen and works by iconic Modernist designers Charlotte Perriand and Jean-Michel Frank, as well as Ken Price’s ground-breaking ceramics.

François-Xavier Lalanne indulged his fancy and paid homage to his rural home in Ury, France when he designed his magical bronze and epoxy stone flock of sheep. The Design auction will include a Set of four sheep - comprised of 3 ewes and 1 ram estimated at $350,000 -500,000. Margaret Hunam Redhead, daughter-in-law of Lord Rothermere, lived in an apartment on the Champs-Elysés. In the 1920s, during a renovation of the apartment, she commissioned a series of works from prominent designer Emile-Jacques Ruhlman, including a handsome dressing table and side chair of amboyna veneer, shagreen, ivory, and bronze. The set, estimated at $200,000 - 300,000, will be sold together with two beds estimated at $60,000-80,000.

Danish architect Poul Henningsen made his mark in the design world through lighting. Henningsen’s Monumental ‘double-spiral’ wall light, for the Scala Cinema and Concert Hall, Århus Theater, Århus, Denmark, estimated at $180,000 - 250,000, is an original fixture from the series of 26 fixtures commissioned for the theater in 1955. Twelve lights were de-accessioned during an extensive renovation in 1981. Fourteen ‘double spiral’ lights remain in situ. Works by 20th-Century design masters Charlotte Perriand and Jean-Michel Frank complete the sale for design enthusiasts with Perriand’s three-legged Rare free-form desk, circa 1958, estimated at $160,000-240,000 and Frank’s Rare ‘Aragon’ low table, with ‘pineapple’ legs, circa 1934 estimated at $150,000 – 200,000.

The Design department specializes in contemporary ceramic art. Works presented in the June sale will include Ken Price’s ‘Steeps’, 2004, estimated at $60,000 -80,000 and works from his peers John Mason and Ron Nagle, amongst others. Phillips de Pury & Company is proud to be the sponsor of Public Programs for “Ken Price Sculpture: A Retrospective” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), 16 September 2012 -6 January 2013.
