AWARD FOR COURAGE TO AI WEIWEI AND AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP TO CHIEF ALMIR NARAYAMOGA SURUI
London - The Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation Awards will be presented to two inspiring figures for their outstanding contribution to human rights, social justice and the environment at ‘Arts for Human Rights.’
The Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation
Award for Courage will be presented to
Ai Weiwei, in recognition of his heroic dedication to free speech and democratic principles and the
Award for Leadership will be presented to
Chief Almir Narayamoga Surui, Chief of the Gamebey Clan of the Suruí People of Rondônia in Brazil, in recognition of his visionary leadership of the Surui people, and his courageous struggle in defence of their ancestral land, in the Amazon.
The awards were designed by
Marc Quinn and produced by
Swarovski.

Bianca Jagger, Founder and Chair of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, said “The idea for the ‘Arts for Human Rights’ Gala came to me while I was campaigning for the courageous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, earlier this year. I was inspired by his valiant stand in defence of free speech and human rights. Ai Weiwei’s life and work are emblematic of the values we are honouring at ‘Arts for Human Rights.’”
“We are the World and the World is us. Everything is interconnected we are one superorganism and we forget other people and the planet at all peril,” stated by
Marc Quinn, artist and designer of the awards.
Phillips de Pury & Company will be hosting the charity auction ‘Arts for Human Rights’ on the 14th October to raise awareness and funds for the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation (BJHRF). This event, sponsored by
Swarovski, will be the first fundraising event for the charity. Highlights of the auction will be on view at Howick Place from 6 – 14 October 2011.
Simon de Pury remarked, “We are proud to lend our support for the launch of 'Art for Human Rights'. Bianca Jagger has always been surrounded by great artists. It is wonderful to witness how they have all rallied around her in supporting her deep and passionate commitment to human rights and the protection of the environment through the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation.”
