According to legend, Cyrus the Great was born the son of shepherds. By the time he died, circa 530 B.C.E., he had established the word’s largest empire, a unified Persia from the Hellespont to the Indus River basin. In October 1971, to mark the monarchy’s 2,500th anniversary, the Shah of Iran hosted a week of extravagant celebrations at Persepolis, the ancient Persian capital. Distinguished guests, monarchs, and heads of state stayed in a vast ‘tent village’ decorated by Parisian firm Maison Jansen. In collaboration with Jansen, Maria Pergay designed the present model, a canopy bed for the Shah’s wife, Shahbanu Farah Pahlavi. It was her anniversary as well as the monarchy’s; on October 14th, after a birthday dinner of roast peacock and Dom Perignon ’59, the Shahbanu slept in a similar bed under a canopy of Porthault linen and steel.
