  • Catalogue Essay

Althoff has been praised as a ‘history painter’ delving into the collective unconsciousness of Germany and its 20th Century unspeakable path. Thematically, Althoff doses German history with a sexual undertow, evoking in some of his most frequently reproduced works an authoritarian, homosocial Wilhelminian society. These pictures waiver between elegance and awkwardness in their execution and in their reception. Not only does Althoff work from a past contents and context wise, his image bank and painterly style are equally derived from early 20th century German Expressionism and are reconfigured within a contemporary style by introducing collaged technique into his creations.
