  • Catalogue Essay

The reference 1563 Heuer Autavia Exotic is considered one of the most desired Autavia from the 1970's and according to literature, maybe as little as 20 pieces were ever manufactured with one example today exhibiting in the Tag Heuer Museum. It is interesting to note that the reference number between the lugs at 6 o'clock on this example and the other examples known reads 1163, which would indicate that Heuer used cases already in stock and not used for the reference 1163. This example is further distinguished by its extraordinary condition and very vibrant dial.

As early as 1882, founder Edouard Heuer held a patent for a chronograph watch; in 1887, he received a patent for an oscillating pinion, which is still in use today. These specialized timepieces have been at the heart of the firm's success, enabling the brand to be chosen as early timekeepers for the Olympics. In 1969, the company introduced their first automatic chronograph watch, the Monaco Heuer, which celebrated the Monaco Grand Prix.
