  • Catalogue Essay

The current lot These Days, 1994 is a perfect example of Glenn Brown’s passion for portraiture. Early modernists are strong influences if not the actual subjects of Glenn Browns artworks. Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Baselitz and especially Auerbach show up in his work in different forms from paintings to sculptures made of oil paint and plaster such as the current lot. His palettes are also influenced by artists such as Cezanne, Picasso, and Renoir, adding another layer to the appropriation. The artist says, “Color and its myriad of combinations always amazes me. To paint the expression of a face and to change that expression, from happy to sad by one miniscule change in the shadow of an eye, makes one never want to do anything else."
