The work of Welsh artist Dan Rees is underpinned by an innate sense of materiality. As Rees explores unconventional materials such as plasticine and gravel in other works, Artex, transforms an interior décor faux-pas into compelling canvases. The origin of Artex as a material was synonymous with affordable home decorating in the 1970's and was notoriously difficult to remove. Appropriating the swirling patterns and motifs created by this decorative material, Rees brings a textured vibrancy to his canvases.

Rees reintroduces the material in his Artex paintings as an ironic gesture – infiltrating contemporary galleries and homes with a material so quintessentially dated. The artist often uses humour in his work to “lead you down a road, perhaps to something more profound in a gentle and productive manner.” (Dan Rees as interviewed by Adam Carr, Swansea Berlin, Mousse Magazine, Online.) Artex, part-imbued with a sense of personal nostalgia is also representative of collective memory and a charming sense of humour.
